‘Larousse Agricole’ is an encyclopaedia used by agricultural engineers. I was looking through the 1921 edition and under honey found the following:
Fraud:
A fraudulent process used by indelicate beekeepers is to make the bees consume, and stock in their comb, ordinary sugar, distributed by feeding syrup.

I'm not sure they're all that different. Hasn't some imported honey been impounded as being little more than syrup? I seem to remember reading somewhere that sugar provided to beekeepers during the war was dyed to prevent this ...
