Help with Pollen Identification.

Hi All. I have over the past week or so, noticed some of my ladies returning with a white stripe down their backs. (Please see picture)

I wonder if its Himalayan Balsm? I haven't found any near me, but there is plenty along the banks of the River Eden, with the nearest about a mile away. Not far for a hungry bee I suppose, but could it be something else?

Definitely Himalayan balsam. Mine are flying 4 or 5 km to reach it. It seems to be spreading year by year.

There are pictures of bees and a wasp with the white stripe in this thread.

The white stripe is a sure sign of balsam.
All my colonies are finding some at the moment.
It seems to be a good source of both nectar and pollen.

Thanks Gavin. I marvell at just how far these little creatures will travel. Although I have been known to travel 300 miles for a good curry!

As I'm no longer so handy for the big cities, I've taken to making them myself!

Yup, it is those times when they are flying for something recognisable that you realise just how far they will go. Even up to 13km in some situations (an American study), and I've had experience of them going about 10 km.

When yours are foraging enthusiastically, see if you can spot any waggle dances.
