Default What happens if a queen lays too many eggs.

If a queen was laying more eggs than the colony could cater for would the workers eat the eggs and is there a ratio as to how many eggs/larvae can be looked after in relation to the size of the colony.

The workers regulate egg laying by control of how much food the Q gets. So there is some control in the relationship between number of workers and brood. Eggs can be eaten but a colony tends to grow depending on forage, linked to how much to feed available for young bees. Something to watch out for when making splits is to make sure any brood has enough bees to look after them.
