Thread: 14x12 to Dadant

    Default 14x12 to Dadant

What is the best way to move a colony from 14x12 to Dadant please? I could do a shook swarm after I take the honey off, or put a Dadant brood box on top of the 14X12 (I do not have any drawn Dadant frames). No OSR here by the way.

Box on top with piece of ply in between with a large hole in middle. Feed to draw foundation.
When queen moves upstairs put on QE and 3 weeks later it is done.
Because 14 x 12 is bottom bee space and Dadant is top may need to nail some laths to each side of ply (relevant to the box that side touches).

Shook swarm after the honey crop likely to be late to get them up to strength for the winter.

Yes, I suppose it would be a better option in the Spring.

OK thanks. I will adopt this approach.

I run Dadants, but am not sure if they're the same over here. The insides of my brood frames measure 27cm x 42 cm. and the box takes 10 frames, though there is a 12 frame version. If it's the same, why are you interested in changing to this hive? What is your climate like ? (your location?).
