Is oasis safe for bees?

Rate this Entry
When setting up mini nucs, I am never sure how much water to give, and thought of putting in a block of oasis as used by flower arrangers, and some way of keepig it topped up.
Has anyone ever done this

Thanks

    Hi Phil

Haven't done this myself, but as Oasis is blown polystyrene - I think - and your mini-nucs are very probably made from polystyrene, then it ought to be fine?

How do people usually address thirst in mini-nucs? Is the assumption that they can easily go out for water themselves during the mini-nuc season? Maybe it partly depends on the feed you are offering, with fondant requiring more water than light syrup.

I never put water in Apideas. I fill the feed compartment with fondant and leave them to it. I have tried syrup but if it gets ignored it starts to ferment or gets mould all over it.

    Hi Phil,

I was recommended on a bee breeding course that when you put bees into the mini nucs and close them up you spay with water morning and afternoon.

    Thanks, all.

Jimbo, I think I must have been on the same course!!! My problem is how much water to spray in.

John and I did everything as per couse, 250ml precise, on our home made mini nucs, but with wax starter strips in place of foundation..
3 days later, no comb. Luckily I had some beautiful drawn comb from starter strips fom another hive, so put some in, queen cells in yesteray, so live in hope. What else can a beekeepr do than that?
