Beekeeping in Italy? Or France?

Rate this Entry
Hi,
I'll be off to Italy/France in June through November and want to work for a few months on an organic bee-farm to learn more about keeping of bees (all my hives in Moray/Scotland have died over the last 4 years) and possibly bring back a couple of colonies.

Anyone knows of some beekeepers over there who would welcome help?

    Hi Sverre,
I am not sure at all about bringing back colonies. If you bring 'alien' bees to an area they will cross breed with the local stocks - weakening the attributes that make them survivors in that area.
Fancy Italian bees are bred for that local climate. You can't compare Moray with anywhere in Italy except maybe the Tyrol. But even there it is not so cool and wet in the summer... If your bees keep dying they are either not suited to the area, or although I am loathe to sound harsh, you could be doing something better.
Maybe get in touch with black bee breeders here. They might have some good ideas.
    all the best

    Hi Sverre

Any idea why your colonies died - were you trying some less efficient method of Varroa control?

    best wishes
