  1. St. Patrick's Day update

    Ok. I know it would read better if it were St Andrew's day update but today was a public holiday combined with a temperature of 14c so I got a chance to check quickly through a few colonies.

    I was able to have a look at eleven in all with inspection time limited to 5-10 minutes in each case.
    All had some brood and I saw ten of the queens including several of the ones I still have to mark. I will wait a few more weeks until I get a warmer day as there is no rush.

  2. Back to the home place - more bees

    We called in to see my parents this afternoon.
    My father is a beekeeper and most of his 13 colonies were flying strongly and bringing in pollen of various hues. I helped him do his Apiguard treatments in the Autumn and I thought a lot of his colonies were weak at that point. We checked the Varroa trays today and there was no sign of any mites. He keeps his trays in over winter and I don't but we try and not fall out over it!
    He has good natured black bees and he has kept bees continuously ...

  4. Getting started 2010

    I spent the first 7 weeks of 2010 out of the country so the bees were free from any temptation I may have had to tinker.
    I made my first check on 21st February and was really pleased to find signs of life in all 13 colonies and nucs
    All were treated with Oxalic on 22nd December and I had fed over 100k of sugar in September and October.
    I also did an Apiguard treatment which started in mid September.
    I didn't lift any frames of bees out as it is still far too cold, so ...
