I was at a couple of brilliant lectures yesterday.

Tom Seeley did a presentation on (a) How a swarm chooses a location to move to, and (b) how they navigate there when they have made their decision.

There are some videos of his work here (http://www.sciencefriday.com/videos/series/5/), but if you get a chance to attend a lecture, don't miss it. He is a great communicator.

He has a book out - Honey Bee Democracy (http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=honeybee+democracy&tag=googhydr-21&index=stripbooks&hvadid=5834625726&ref=pd_sl_10evczap23_b).

Which is excellent. A fantastic account of how swarms locate, choose and move to a new 'home'. Seeley explains his experiments very clearly. Not beekeeping, but a wealth of information on bees. Highly recommended.
