We will happily permit small adverts here for single or a few items from private individuals free of charge. Equipment: remember if buying secondhand hives to destroy all comb and scorch the interior surface of wooden boxes.
Bees: SBA policy is to encourage home-raised bees rather than imports to minimise the threat of the introduction of additional pests and pathogens and avoid the further mixing of exotic strains into remaining native types of honeybee. However, obtaining bees in many areas of Scotland is difficult with high overwintering losses in recent winters and large numbers of beginners seeking bees. Our advice to prospective buyers of bees is to enquire locally as to the reputation of the seller, and to explicitly ask the seller for information on any inspections by the inspectorate or the seller himself for brood disease.
